Where to buy your GeForce GTX 280

Posted at: 5:00pm 16th June 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

We shop around the UK's retailers to find you the best deal on a GeForce GTX 280 card

MSI GeForce GTX 280

By now, you should have spotted that Nvidia has released a new GPU called the GeForce GTX 280 GTX. However, in case you haven’t, you can read our full review of BFG and MSI's GeForce GTX 280 cards here, and you can also check out our video of us taking one apart here.

Of course, we know that prices can vary massively between different retailers, which is why we’ve had a good look through various retailers’ sites to see how their prices compare on various cards. Along with the MSI and BFG cards that we tested, we also looked for prices of some other models, just to give a fair snapshot of the market. The models we've researched have the following specs:

  • Asus - 602MHz core, 1,296MHz shaders and 1,107MHz (2,214MHz effective) GDDR3 RAM
  • BFG - 615MHz core, 1,350MHz shaders and 1,107MHz (2,214MHz effective) GDDR3 RAM
  • EVGA - Superclocked Edition - 621MHz core, 1,350MHz shaders and 1,143MHz (2,286MHz effective) GDDR3 RAM
  • MSI - 650MHz core, 1,300MHz shaders and 1,150MHz (1,300MHz effective) GDDR3 RAM
  • Zotac - 602MHz core, 1,296MHz shaders and 1,107MHz (2,214MHz effective) GDDR3 RAM

You can see our findings in the table below, with eBuyer currently offering the best deal on a stock-speed Zotac card for just £400 inc VAT. There's surprisingly quite a wide range of prices for the same cards between retailers, although not many of the cards are in stock at the moment, However, Scan claims that it currently has stock of the BFG card.

Retailer Asus BFG EVGA MSI Zotac
Aria N/A £469.94 N/A £469.94 N/A
Dabs
N/A £469.11 £518.99 N/A N/A
eBuyer N/A N/A N/A N/A £400
Scan £433.88 £469.13 £519.35 N/A N/A
Overclock £462.95 £469.99 N/A N/A N/A
Overclockers £481.74 £469.99 £528.74 N/A N/A

the silence is a bit worrying but let's hope it's because AMDATi have a new policy of shoouting everything to theworld so their rivals know their every move. Also atm the don't have anything in the price range of the 280 (ie, £4hundred-and-ridiculous +) mostof their products are £100-£250 (apart from the FireGL, which is for workstations, and the MV series, which is for stockbrokers) so the 260 is likely to be their nearest competitor. I'm hoping that their new cards giv good value-for-money, whether or not they are as good as the 280... but we can dream!

ATi Alternative?

I think it's pretty much a certain now that ATi just don't have an alternative to beat this card or it's lower spec at this price. When ATi launch a card or details of their up and coming card, by that afternoon Nvidia release word on their newer, cheaper and better performing altenative. After 2 days full of news on specs, overclocking ability and benchmarks about Nvidia, ATi are fair too silent. It looks as if the 4xxx series will die on it's ass like the 3xxx series. I hope not but the silence is a worry.

the £270.56..

..was including VAT, making it the cheapest 260 I've seen so far. And NewParadigm is right in my opinion. I also think nVidia got it right with the 8800GT, low cost and power consumption and good performance...especially considering you can get a 1Gb model too :D (the1Gb model is £160! how can that be mathed for price/performance?)

Comment by EdArch at 10:10pm 17th June 2008

damn...

and I thought we were over the whole ridiculously priced top end graphics card thing. What worries me is, will the sensibly priced cards be much of an improvement over what people already have. Nvidia got it right when they relkeased the 8800GT ahead of its other models... affordable, and a great performer.

Comment by NewParadigm at 3:22pm 17th June 2008

well ... no

if you read the review on this site then no the 9800gx2 doesn't do the same job or better at a lot of games. It has a much lower minimum meaning you will not get as consistently smooth an experience.

Comment by NewParadigm at 3:14pm 17th June 2008

Hmmmm...

Great Card... Shame about the price, Lets just hope that it will be a great competitor with the 48xx series (BTW, some sites say the single core version of the 4850 is only a tad bit slower than the 98 GX2 - which makes me think we'll finally see the competition again)

Cyberpower has them

For £385 ex, £452 inc Vat and should have stock by the end of the week.

the Gainward & Gigabyte versions of the 260...

are on pre-order in Scan for £270.56 which, considering you're not getting a huge amount less, seems like bargain of the year

Comment by EdArch at 12:39am 17th June 2008

I'll pass....

arrived in the nick of time - but I'll wait for the 260 variants.

Comment by Xonerater at 10:41pm 16th June 2008

Worth it

Is it really worth it. The 9800Gx2 is cheaper and does just about the same or better job

Comment by T_O_M_C at 7:54pm 16th June 2008

HOOOOOW MUCH?

Comment by pveater at 7:00pm 16th June 2008

its too much.

i want crysis, but it costs 2 much 4 this card. i hope ATI's price/performance is a bit better.

Comment by TBallS at 6:37pm 16th June 2008

Asus GTX 280 TOP

Scan also has the Asus GTX 280 TOP edition listed for just £457. It's clocked well in excess of the extortionatly priced EVGA card at 2430(mem) and670(gpu). It could be a while before that comes into stock though.
