A return to World War II, as the next version of Call of Duty promises co-operative online play and flamethrower frolics

After a brief foray into the world of modern weaponry, not to mention British leading characters with stupid names, the Call of Duty series is now returning to World War II for its fifth outing, called World at War. However, Activision promises that the game will offer more than your usual World War II battling, saying that World at War ‘throws out the rulebook of war to transform WWII combat through a new enemy, new tactics and an uncensored experience of the climatic battles that gripped a generation.’

You get to play either the US Marines or the Russians, and the game introduces cooperative gameplay to the mix, as well as a flamethrower weapon, which looks like a lot of fun in the trailer (see below). The game is being developed by Treyarch, and the company’s studio head, Mark Lamia, claims that the game will give you ‘a host of new enemies that employ entirely new tactics, as well as new, groundbreaking tools – like co-op and the flamethrower – to succeed in the epic fight.’

The new co-op mode allows PC gamers to play with up to four other players online, while PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers will also get the option to play a local co-op game with a two-player, split-screen setup. According to Activision, playing the new co-op campaign will also allow you to ‘unlock perks’ for use in the competitive multiplayer mode, as well as allowing you to rack up experience points. The game will also ‘scale dynamically to provide a deeper level of challenge’ according to your experience rank, as well as the ranks of your friends.

Call of Duty: World at War is scheduled to be released in Autumn this year. Could this game repeat the phenomenal chart-topping success of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare? Let us know your thoughts.

My review of call of duty 5

I think cod 5 is better graphic wise and gameplay wise, you either like this game or you hate it.I love it.The game is now harder online, the weapons are better, and the prestige level is 65.At level 65 you unlock the sexy flamethrower :).You can just incinerate close enemies.Shotguns, the shotguns have improved , they have more power, range and one is even a double-barreled shotgun.I have noticed it's more serious gamers that play this game, less serious gamers have already gone back to cod 4 so id just think about that before u buy the game. It's a lengthy game online but the story mode is disapointing, only 15missions,the favourites of mine being the russians where you learn more about the game from and more exciting stealth missions.Online you can play co-op story mode and can even put cheats on the game by collecting hidden death cards. My favourite cheats are paintball guns and the one where you shoot somebody in their head which causes them to explode :).Also a minigame is now available to those who have completed the story mode,Nazi zombies :D.You are baracaded into a building which is a mission in the story mode but has been edited to look more scary.Wood planks baracade the windows to slow zombies geting in,for the zombies to get in they must remove every peice of wood from that window, you can repair the baracade. To kill the zombies it is easier to just shoot them in the head. You can pay 1000 points to remove a sofa from the stairs so you can go up the stairs to buy extra weapons.Their are other rooms too,the help room which costs 900 points to get in,you can acsess the magic box for 950 points which gives you a random weapon, favourites being the flamethrower and the ray gun.The ray gun, a unique gun only availabe in zombie mode and a rare gun to get from the box.The round goes on the longer you survive, and the zombies get faster. Their are plenty of guns to choose from online and i recommend you buy this game because it owns!!

wtf are treyarch doing

Just because its in the pacific doesnt mean it will be any different to the other ww2 games. Dont activision get the message that treyarch suck at making games an they have to borrow IW machine to make it slightly decent. Could anyone name a half decent game that treyarch has mede?

Comment by Killbot at 11:57am 30th June 2008

COD3

Was just a Marketing stunt for the console fanboys, and milk it until they released a true multi platform game such as COD4. Taking a step back and heading to what looks like jungle/pacific WW2 fighting might be a bad idea. They should do what conflict desert storm did, and produce a Gulf war scened game. Perhaps even focus on aspects of the 1991 kuwait, or even the more recent 2005+ in iraq?

Comment by Lightning_Pete at 11:22pm 28th June 2008

WW2

Wow now we are short of those, how about a Falklands war one? Don't think I will be buying this one while cod4 is around.

Comment by kazara1001 at 8:24am 27th June 2008

What, new concepts?

Wow, a game where I can play a US Marine. There's a real shortage of those, isn't there!

Comment by Landy_Ed at 10:45pm 26th June 2008

Yay

Loved the old COD games and can't wait for a new WW2 one... Although 3 wasn't amazing...

Give it a chance

To be honest, I loved Call of Duty 4, Never played Call of Duty 3, but just because it is set in WWII does not mean it will definatly be linear, the Call of Duty series seems to always touch on the Americans/British Vs Germans. Its time they did a bit more with the Japanese side of WWII, and we all know how clever the Japanese where in WWII, so that opens up a load of new doors for Treyarch to use in COD5. The only game ive actually played that used the Japanese in WWII was Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault. They didn't seem to use all the content they could have done. So come on, lets give Treyarch a chance to rectify there problems from COD3 :)

COD5 Worth it?

The reason everyone preferes COD4MW is because it's not based in WWII, alot of people i know prefer the game because of the big modern weapons you can use, and the best part of the game is the online play, i know peeps who have bought the game just for the online play. What they need the next game to be is ''Modern'' Big new guns, online play needs to be the same style as the current COD4, let's face COD3 online was rubbish! They need to bring on more weapons and more maps but keep the online play the same as COD4, maybe increase the amout of players in the game types on the PS3 and XBOX, 12 players in a team battle is ok for small maps but you need at least 18 in the big maps, hence alot of peeps prefer Ground War.

Comment by booney at 1:17pm 24th June 2008

We shall see

Well the "climactic" content of the may be genuine, however WW II based games are always going to have the disadvantage of history working against them. Their very nature dictates they are always going to be linear, where as CoD 4 had more of a free licence to explore. The nuclear explosion being one of those moments that, when happened left the player almost dumbstruck, even shocked. If it could live up to the similarly named documentary series it will truly be an epic. However I fear the title will be where the similarities end.

Comment by stuartpengs at 2:04am 24th June 2008

Meh

The thing that really made CoD4 shine for me was the fact it wasn't based in WW2. I think it should stay in the "modern combat" era, but hey, that's just me.

Comment by msremmert at 10:59pm 23rd June 2008

Treyarch were only given something like 8 months to make COD 3. Any game would be bollocks with that sort of development time. This time, they've had 2 years. I'm not saying it definitely wont be shit, but it should be far better than 3 was.

Comment by mmatoms at 7:19pm 23rd June 2008

This is gunna get crushed.

Starcraft 2, Possible Duke Nukem Forever, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King, Crysis: Warhead, Far Cry 2, Quake Live. Hardcore games, there is no room for the scripted world of COD.

Comment by C7ouD at 7:09pm 23rd June 2008

The human movement reproduction in that video looked spot on, and the graphics look good as well. Lets hope the gameplay's up to scratch :) Im not giving up on it yet...

Comment by Gryphon16 at 6:33pm 23rd June 2008

Treyarch claim the were rushed to get 3 out and world at war will be much better so i say we should cut them some slack judge what they come up with, from what ive read and seen so far looks very promising

Comment by heirflick at 3:32pm 23rd June 2008

CoD4 cash in?

With CoD3 being a turd but CoD4 good (if you like that sort of thing) it's clear what they are trying to do is cash in on the success of CoD4 by releasing CoD3v2. Ultimately I blame the naming. Call of Duty 1 and 2 were named properly. Call of Duty 3, being made by other people, should have had a new name, and Call of Duty 4, being completely unrelated to the previous games, ought to have had a new name too. This new game is the sequel to Call of Duty 3, and thus should be called 'Operation Expect Crap' or something.

@ evanjdooner

I think you could be right there, but still i dont think it's right what Activison are doing, im fairly sure i will be giving COD 5 a miss, its just pointless money spinning, i shouldnt have to buy every other game to get the good ones, oh well if cod5 really is rubbish then hopefully no one will buy it and Activision will get the idea

Comment by Gz_MysteriousPol at 2:09pm 23rd June 2008

HMMmmm...

I think it may be a risk to release it near the same time as FC2 and Crysis Warheads release dates.

Comment by NikoBellic at 1:47pm 23rd June 2008

@ Gz_MysteriousPol

I agree that Treyarch's COD 3 wasn't great (they did he expansion packs for the first too games, if memory serves). However, having Treyarch develop COD 5 gives Infinity Ward about 3 years to work on COD 6. To make a really good game, it takes about 3 years. If Infinity Ward produced COD games as often as Activsion want them, they wouldn't be up to the standard of COD 1, 2 or 4. I'm happy to let COD 5 slip past if it means that COD 6 is as good as 4 (well, maybe a bit longer...).

Comment by evanjdooner at 1:39pm 23rd June 2008

Are Activision's CEO's alright in the head?

I see it this way COD 1 + 2 were brilliant, made by Infinity Ward COD 3... utter bollocks, made by Treyarch COD 4 back on form, bestseller, made by Infinity Ward so wat do they do with COD 5? go back to WW2 and give it back to Treyarch... sounds clever I think this has a whiff of the Lucasarts cleverness division getting axed about it, and everyone should realise how frickin retarded the ceo's of activision must be

Comment by Gz_MysteriousPol at 1:36pm 23rd June 2008
