NGOHQ.com claims to have hacked Nvidia’s PhysX driver to run on a Radeon HD 3850 card
Nvidia might think that it’s got control over hardware accelerated PhysX now that it’s bought Ageia, but the driver hackers over at NGOHQ.com claim to have hacked the CUDA code for PhysX to run it on a Radeon HD 3850 card.
We first saw a dubious-looking screenshot (see below) of the achievement on HardOCP yesterday, but decided that it was probably just a dodgy Photoshop hoax. However, the guy who posted the screenshot on NGOHQ now claims that he’s going to put up a video of the hack in action soon, and says that he may even make it available for Radeon owners to download in the future.
If the rumour is to be believed, then the hack makes a major difference to the Radeon HD 3850’s score in 3DMark Vantage with PhysX enabled. A screenshot of the 3DMark results shows the system scoring P4262. Although we don’t know what CPU was used in the test, the CPU score in the screenshot is 22,606, suggesting that the system is getting a major boost from PhysX being enabled. The GPU score of 3,354 in the screenshot is bang-on, as a Radeon HD 3850 score 3,349 in our tests at using the Performance preset in Issue 58.
The poster of the hack at NGOHQ.com, Regeneration, promises that we can ‘expect to see some cool demo video in several days-weeks,’ but also says that ‘it takes a lot of time and work to make CUDA compatible enough with Radeon to get it to fully work without any issues.’
We’re not entirely sure if this is legitimate yet, and the fact that it says ‘Ho ho ho’ in the screenshot’s address bar isn’t particularly reassuring either. That said, if this turns out to be real then it would be an interesting development for the GPU industry, showing that CUDA-compatibility is more about industry competition than hardware requirements.
Either way, it brings up some interesting questions about GPU physics and how far people may be allowed to take driver modding in the future. Is this a hack or a hoax? We won’t know until NGOHQ releases its hack to download (or not).
Another month goes by without it being released to enable Physic on ATI. So I guess from that non-release of the hack that its a con. I've got more hope in CUDA now than getting PhysX on ATI :( Has anyone managed to get any of the Physic software by Ageia/Havoc, etc to run on ATI yet?
at least sum1 (flubber) can come out with a post worth reading. oh & i include my post in the not worth reading section lol
TOTALLY OFF TOPIC! (i know) to be quite precise i reckon Consoles are dying apparently companies such as Sony (PS3) and Microsoft (Xbox) due to the fact they lower the prices so a consoles can be sold! they loose billions on just selling the console by it self! here is some figures: Sony lost: $2.16 billion in 2007 and $1.16 billion in 2008. Microsoft lost: last year 1.9 billion!!! they rely mostly on making the money back from software and accessories which is quite a risky market! and with the latest news story in CPC "Intel: Cuda" Co-Manager Pat Gelsinger describes yet another problem with consoles! until lately i use to hear a lot of "i don't have to worry about drivers/software with consoles" it turns out you are right... you don't however the developers struggle to even comprehend the language used in programming PS3 games... and as i mentioned before Massive Multi player Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG) are growing and growing... best part is they are not relying on a console and 1 company but rather more to the open market of computers... the way it should be! very slowly people will realise that instead of getting PS3 it will be easier to have a multimedia PC instead... which btw consoles are! they started having HDD, keyboards, Internet, Wifi... i dont really see the diference except dividing the market trying to make more of the profit... and having bigger control over what you do, how you do it and how much you have to pay for it!
How is hacking the physx code to make it work on ATI cards akin to downloading a game iso, game crack and playing it for free again? I dont see how anyone is losing money, I dont see how it is going to cause a loss of revenue for the industry as a whole, therefore I dont see how it can be contributing to the death of pc gaming (if such a thing exists, which a whole seperate point for debate)
"[PhysX] takes all the weight off the CPU"
That's not possible.
When Nvidia bought PhysX they were quoted on this site and the mag as saying they were making the PhysX free to other GPU developers and that the purchase of PhysX didn't make it a Nvidia exclusive product. All this means is that someone decided to do it before ATi got a copy from Nvidia to work on. Or maybe they have and put it through a driver hack site to try and steel some thunder.
What I really want to see is a physics benchmark of the graphics cards. For about the same price as a physx card, you can buy an Asus GeForce EN8800 GT 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail but is it really more powerful than the physx card? And should we really pay £400-£500 for a graphics card and use it for physics?

i think that hacking to get stuff working on ati cards is wrong but at the same time opens up the market again. us consumers are the ones that will win at the end of the day
Oh pete don't say things like that it will only fuel the flames! :p I see what you mean about saturating the market with products Nvidia has certainly managed that one but it could almost be argued they have saturated it so much that they have alienated customers as they haven't a clue whats what. As for ATI what do you mean exactly with regards to rethinking their engineering strats?
Insanely somehow qualify yourselves as the be it all known (i say this very loosely) as more mature than the other(s) in both contexts of this topic and your ego's.. I can safely say that unless Ati seriously re-think its engineering strategies rather than marketing stunts, your all screwed, whether your an nvidia or amd/ati fanboy. The basis of a monopoly developing in PC systems and/or consoles would make the market saturated with one set of products, hence the ability to have higher lead in prices on introduction to the public markets. If anything, i'd think you lot were working for Ati, bickering over whos stream processors are going to fit with whose billion transistors! :)
i say give me that hacked driver thingy ;) lol. on the pc gaming topic, i reckon that it was MS that *messed* it all up. think about it? what would be the best way to take over the gaming market?. force gpu makers down the dx10 route & while their trying to find their *bottoms* from their elbows steel the market from under them lol. bit of a wild comment but what the hell :) ***MODERATED FOR COARSE LANGUAGE - please keep it clean***
Everyone on this websie KNOWS you *really like* AMD/ATi. *I don't believe you are bringing much of value to the conversation.* The last two comments have been On topic, 3 *people* have gone offtopic on this and that is YOU, Flubber and Dj. So *please stay on topic.* ***HEAVILY MODERATED FOR COARSE AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE - please keep it clean and civil***
@tiff_lee That's how I understand it,I had recent email correspondence with Nvidia tech help about Physx, they sent me info stating that you could use graphics card as a dedicated Physx card and dissimilar to those used in the graphics setup so for instance you may have two 9800gtx's in sli doing the graphics and any 8000 series onward graphics card doing the physx
That is actually a very good point. I would assume having the GPU handle physics is only good if it has spare capacity (or perhaps that handle it so much better than CPU) but I don't know about you guys but my gfx card seems to be busy as it is (or is this where SLI comes into form) Have I misunderstood something? It kind of made sense with a separate card for physics, then I seem to remember initially nVidia said you could, if you had 2 gfx cards, run one for physics and one for "normal" graphics. They dont seem to mention that now. Sorry if this is a noobish understanding of the subject
Would you *please desist*!!!, Your the childish *one* around here who *rubbishes* everything we're talking about, But then when we're on a different topic you say that its great.... Just do us a favour... Grow up, And sort your life out!! ***MODERATED FOR COARSE AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE (though probably not enough) - please keep it clean and civil***
At the moment in game physics is restricted to producing nice eye candy and can't actually affect game play simply because there is no unified standard. Once that is sorted out physics will play a huge role and totally alter the way games are played. . I think Ageia's PPU showed us that physic on a dedicated card be that PPU or GPU is many times better than on a CPU and so I would like to see that sort of implementation succeed. Whether that be Nvidias Physx or some future incarnation of Intel/Ati Havoc FX gpu physic I don't really care. The important thing is that it is decided swiftly so that things can progress and deliver the innovations that their full implementation promises. . This hack may well be of value in that it may accelerate the formation of a dominant physics platform allowing Nvidia and Ati cards to support Physx. . As regards the hackers being sued...I don't think that Nvidia will be complaining if this helps physx to become the future physics api....they have already said it is free for others to use as they push to make it the accepted standard and would then..in all probability impose license fees. I think it is more likely that Ati would be annoyed as they have declined to incorporate cuda/physx into their cards at this time...in all probability because they don't want to hand Nvidia a huge source of future revenue by owning the standard for physics. So I don't know if ATi could sue them...I suppose it depends what they are hacking..is it the Nvidia Physx software, the ATi driver or both...if it involves the Ati driver then there would be that possibility.
I think this pretty much proves that CPC has become a breeding house for *people whose opinions I don't necessarily agree with*. NikoBellic,Take a look and see who mentioned GAMES consoles first, though then again your comments are nothing more than fanboyistic. Flubber - my limited group of friends which I have never mentioned, are ALL into Open Source, so get your facts straight and again, talk some sense. DJ - *I disagree with your points in the strongest possible way*. This bloke is not a genius, he is most likely the kind of person to hack the *life* out of anything he can find, not pay the bills and do nothing else with his life. I cannot believe HOW bad this forum has gone, there used to be some real knowledgable people on here, though now it seems there has been a flood of 12 year old kids *making points that I believe to be ill-informed*. ***MODERATED FOR COARSE AND ABUSIVE LANGUAGE - please keep it clean and civil***
It is all well taking the load off the cpu and shifting to the gpu but isn't the limiting factor on frame rates usually the gpu anyhow? hence the reason physx originally designed the standalone card to remove the load from both cpu and gpu?
as long as games are developed for it... and if you read the name it is physX so obviously it handles anything that is physical (and takes all the weight off the CPU to allow it to do more!!)
I am yet to be persuaded that physics is something to get excited about I know physics is all the rage at the moment. But perhaps it is just that I haven't seen a convincing example but I just don't see what all the fuss is about. Anyone got any thoughts on where it will really make a difference to the game play? (Rather than being marketing gimmick)
I dont think ATI are going DHill, I think they're just getting back on their feet now!, and this might just save AMD and help them to bring the CPU competition back!, although ATM i'm a bit concerned about Nvidia (I just hope that they can develop something similar to the 280 but for the same price as the 4870... although it may never happen... well in the next 6 months anyway...)
who do u reckon is going to bring out bigger gun and eventualy win and make their standart more popular? i have a feeling ATI has been going only down hill lately... which is extreemly bad! i dont want an intel monopoli! what Are your thoughts on the subject?
I have to agree with Flubber on this one... Oh and C7oud, Go and Play your Consoles and dont even dare to call yourself a proud PC Gamer, But you could call yourself the PC Killer, God... to think I agreed with you on something... I need a bucket! >:-|
i don't care about any of the other rubbish thats been chatted already. The biggest problem for hardware physics at the moment is that its not standardized. If you look at the early days of hardware accelerated graphics, we had 3dfx who dominated the market, who had there own api, 3dfx. The problem with this was that no other manufactures could use it, hence the creation of openGL and directX api's. This gave the hardware developers a standard to design to and gave the programmers a standard to develop to. Now in the physics game, there has to be only one, eventually. programmers will only want to program for one, manufactures will only want to design for one. So since AMD/ATI have now teamed up with Intel on the physics front with Havok. This couldnt be better for Nvidia It means that there physics api could become a standard, along with cuda, both working on ati hardware. I don't think Nvidia are scared of ati as much as they are of intel. On the opensauce front. u know if open gl was the standard, instead of direct x, it would be alot easyer for you to play on any operating system, because the standard would have been open to any developer. instead of tied to the broken os to play DX10.
please shut up your point is irelevant to this discussion. PC Gaming is better than console because that is what it is. PC. consoles are just plug in and play devices made for the guys who dont care about things unless they're shiny and make good noises.
i play computer games since 1991! i hate call of duty! however there is no relevance to the fact that this guy did something great u just blame it on him! "freaking global warming is coz of that silly a** guy that made this wicked drivers" ridiculous... any one? ermmm tbh you are the only one talking about pirates since all of us see the guy as a genius driver inventor (if its true) and as some one pointed out kindly to you there is no connection! i also would liek to go back to where i need to wake up!? wake up from what? can you please tell me how console are so great but in the same time you get 3 games that kick console a** up and down the place! to be more specific i am talking of WOW which has more than 8milion ppl online last time i heard! Lineage II which has HUGE group of fanatic followers and there is the new game Age of Conan! i don't see how computer games area dead? hardly any one plays i disagree with you so do the numbers! UK/USA is not the world! let me take a reality check? no one cares about open source!? u have missed few headlines lately i see! but still i dont care how the code got delivered to me! same crap i will still enjoy the "fruits" if i like it i will buy it so do many ppl... the only one who is in a real need of reality check is u mate! u r judging about the whole industry only by your limited group of friends
My CPU probably costs more than your computer, so spare me the console gamer *rubbish*, I have a PC, I have a Mac, I love them to bits and I have the consoles, they all do their job equally well. ***MODERATED FOR COARSE LANGUAGE - please keep it clean***
.. let's see. I have been playing Games since the Commodore 64, through to the Playstation 3, so I think yes, I do know what I am talking about. We are also not talking about Consoles, we are talking about Pirates and how they contribute just as much damage to the PC industry aswell as the Console market. FLUBBER_BM - *I respectfully disagree with your opinion*, you would have companys and workmen alike bust their *backsides* off so you can enjoy the fruits of their labour? Take a reality check buddy, nobody cares about your Opensource *work*, so leave it out. This is typical new age gamers, they do not know what a PC game is - you are complaining about Console games but I can almost garentee you play Call of Duty 4? A game built AROUND consoles. You do not see people playing PC's anymore and who can blame them? Constant graphics cards being released, shocking driver support, lazy game development, shocking operating systems. Live in a world of dream and you will have what you want, though wake up and smell the fresh stench of a soiled and destroyed industry that is being abused and mutilated. Thankyou & Goodnight. ***MODERATED FOR ABUSIVE AND COARSE LANGUAGE - please keep it clean and civil***
its *people* like you that are causing the death of PC games simply by buying PS/X-box/Wii and so on! i would never buy any console game! like... EVER! however by the tone your using i can imagine u have all 3 PS! i fully support open code! they are rich enought from selling cards for £500 they can colaborate to better their inventions! if its worth it i will buy it just to support the creator! i played the haxed HL2 version but then i went and bought the pack and then the episodes... no matter i had it before i bought it! hopfully this driver meets the world so we can ALL enjoy advances in technology! ***MODERATED FOR ABUSIVE LANGUAGE - please keep it civil***
C7ouD *I respectfully disagree.* For a start the console boom killed PC gaming, nothing else. If piracy was that big of a deal then PC gaming would be huge, but no one would be paying. As it is, I barely know anyone who plays games on a PC because consoles are so much easier. But even if it was a problem, how exactly is modifying the drivers for your hardware slightly comparable to pirating software?? Is modifying your case comparable? Are you suggesting that some development studio will cancel a game because someone has made PhysX work on an ATI card? *I don't believe that is realistic.* ***MODERATED FOR ABUSIVE LANGUAGE - please keep it civil***
I hope it just isnt a hoax. Could make things a bit more interesting
I lvoe how you lot are supporting Piracy. These are the same *people* which are causing the death of PC gaming. All they care about is a few extra 3DMarks. It makes me sick and I hope it IS true so their *bottoms* get sued so hard they wont be able to sit down for a week. ***MODERATED FOR COARSE LANGUAGE - please keep it clean***
This might just encourage devs to make their games use Physx (Well... that is if they become easy to get your hands on...) Lets just hope this story is legit!!
I think it's more intersting that they've got CUDA working on a radeon since hasn't nvidia been openly offering physx to anyone who want's it, including ATI? He should be careful about releasing it, warning letters to Regeneration would be far more appropriate than Daniel K's letters from creative.
Nvidia ***has made a mistake*** there if its true but at least the ati users will get the same advantage the Nvidia users, go go competition- something we havent seen in a while in the GPU market :) ***EDITED FOR COARSE LANGUAGE - please keep it clean***
