Nvidia denies terminating alliance with VIA

Posted at: 11:24am 9th July 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

Following yesterday’s rumours about a nefarious bargain with Intel to terminate its relationship with VIA, Nvidia claims that everything with VIA is still cosy

It looked as though Nvidia and VIA’s relationship had crumbled yesterday, as DigiTimes reported that Nvidia used its alliance with VIA ‘as a bargaining chip to negotiate with Intel.’ The basis of the bargain, according to DigiTimes, was that if Intel allowed Nvidia to produce an integrated graphics chipset for Intel’s Atom CPU, then Nvidia would ‘terminate its alliance with VIA.’

In its story, DigiTimes says that Nvidia refused to comment on the rumour, but Nvidia has confirmed to Custom PC that there’s no truth in it. Nvidia’s product PR manager for Northern Europe, Ben Berraondo, told Custom PC that ‘what’s been written is false,’ adding that ‘Nvidia is CPU agnostic, and we’ll happily work with all CPU manufacturers, including Intel, AMD and ARM. We’re very much still working with VIA as well.’

Berraondo explained the strategy, saying that ‘In the end, our goal is to provide world class GPU support for all users, regardless of their CPU.’ Nvidia and Intel might be having a bit of a war of words at the moment, but Intel is still happily licensing Nvidia to make chipsets for its CPUs, and it’s likely that it would allow Nvidia to make one for Atom as well.

VIA is one of the last companies left with an x86 license, and many have speculated that an alliance between Nvidia and VIA could potentially take on the increasing threat from Intel as it looks to develop graphics chips as well as CPUs.

Niko..

They do not need to say anything because usually business has pulled through to speak for itself. It has happend again here, only CustomPC managed to get hold of a NVIDIA rep and ask them a few questions about the situation. They are far from a push over company, if they were that, they simply would not be in the position they are in now. Dog eat dog world.

Losing respect for them?

I wouldn't lose respect for nvidia just because someone else slates them or might say they're crap I am more than capable of forming my own opinions based on their actions. In fact I am more likely to lose respect for them because they flood the market with unecessary, re-hashed and sometimes useless products, abuse the position of market leader and charge an extortionate amount and somewhat hold back development of games to fit in with their own upgrade plans.

usually when they get slated about something they either say something short or no comment where as now they seem to be sayin F*** off in different words basically lol!!, I'm hoping that Nvidia will keep this up because I dont want anyone losing respect for them just because some other manufacturer slated them!!!.

Since when?

Since when have Nvidia been weak and easily bullied, Niko? Did I miss something? The 'War of Words' is just standard competition - both companies will hype themselves up.
