Rumour control: Intel Nehalem launch brought forward

Posted at: 11:19am 24th July 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

Intel’s new CPU could be launched in just a couple of months

Nehalem Socket

It looks as though we may be getting our hands on Intel’s first forthcoming Nehalem CPUs (codenamed Bloomfield) sooner than we thought if the rumour mill is to believed. Although Intel hasn’t made any official announcements about the release date of Nehalem yet, a leaked roadmap showed that it was scheduled to be released in the final quarter of this year. However, the rumour is that this has now been brought forward to September this year.

The Taiwanese gossip diggers at DigiTimes claim to have spoken to motherboard makers who’ve filled them in on the details. According to the site, ‘Intel's Nehalem-based Bloomfield processors will now launch in September along with X58 chipsets.’ However, the site notes that this will just be a launch, and that we’ll have to wait until October before the new chips are available to buy.

Earlier last week, Nvidia announced that Intel’s forthcoming X58 chipset would be able to support SLI through Nvidia’s nForce 200 chip, allowing compatibility with both SLI and CrossFire dual-graphics technologies. Nehalem will be Intel’s first desktop CPU architecture to feature an integrated memory controller, and will also feature a new socket design (pictured).

@ Atomic34

Oi! Language.

Comment by l3v1ck at 10:47am 26th July 2008

Well i pirated crysis

yes i did and I'll be fucked if i@m spendinding money on a game that dosn't run on a £700 rig. As for Nehalam bring it on :)

Comment by Atomic34 at 11:00pm 25th July 2008

Is this because AMD is doing

AMD might have a better CPU in the pipeline and iNTEL is rushing its next gen of stuff onto the market for good reason > I dont know but it might be

re: point

Not everybody is interrested in games... in fact only a small percentage (and i mean real small) of performace/high-power computation market are vaguely interrested.

Comment by KoopaKingTurtle at 10:27am 25th July 2008

point?

what would be the point in developing fater, bigger, better, hardware if nobody made games that required it to run them?

Comment by NewParadigm at 8:16am 25th July 2008

r.e. poorly coded

Elite when it came out 'back in the day' was a whoping 12K... it was amazing, it ran on almost every system and the game play had me hooked for weeks/months if not years. I look at the bloated, buggy and quite frankly uninspired games like Crysis and it makes me want to cry. What is the point of developing fast, better, bigger hardware if lazy programmers just use it to make life easier for themselves. Here's looking at you O-O fans...

thewelshbrummie

Then don't wait. Buy the Q6600, it's a better processor overclocking wise, that is if you are into it.

Comment by C7ouD at 2:20pm 24th July 2008

LGA775 CPUs

Hopefully this means that they'll drop in price sooner, I'm getting tired of waiting for the penryn quads to drop to a sensible price

I'm sorry, poorly coded????

This is WAY offtopic but some comon knowledge needs to be taught here. There is a sincere difference between coding a game and optimising a game. It is in NVIDIA/ATi's interest to support a game and implement their technology to use the game engine to full effect, if they do not do that then it is their problem, not Crytek's. That is why we see awful Crossfire performance in the game, SLi being the more fruitful of the two. Admittedly they were LAZY on release, whch is typical of EA, they did not support SLi/ Crossfire and optimisation with current drivers were not very good, hence why ATi and NVIDIA released special Crysis drivers, but the coding of the game is not poor. People who complain about that obviously are not pleased with the way it performs on their PC's which would lead me to believe they should have gone for hardware which had the best optimisation for the game. Just a thought. Anyhow, back OT me thinks.

Crysis

It's just one game, if you going to moan about one of the greatest games (graphically) then don't, I agree it is a very demanding game, but, it is a game thats near enough a tech demo showing what can actually be done with DX9c and DX10(so far)

Nehalem coming into market sooner,

Now seriously, did anyone really believe that Intel & Co would lose the Xmas gravy train where computer sales are at their highest and bring Nehalem to the market after New Year's ? Come on!!! That said it is of course a very good move, especially for myself as I am planning to built my cpc after October. mpc

Comment by mpc000 at 1:11pm 24th July 2008

@Niko

I completely agree with you, the Crysis engine has proven itself to scale extremely poorly with any, and every, component out there. nVidia have been bending over backwards to try to make their cards work with Crysis (did very well with the GX2) even when Crytek claimed the engine was supposedly "optimised" for the GeForce 8 series. The fact that Crytek are making Warhead run on a £600 PC just goes to prove how poorly optimised the original engine was. I think there is no excuse to resort to "Crysis was too awesome for today's hardware" when it should've been Crytek's responsibility to make it work rather than the consumer's responsibility to upgrade.

Comment by Zhaoman at 12:58pm 24th July 2008

When Crytek fix the performance issues with this new "expansion pack" then I will change my mind about the coding, but obviously with the current coding they focussed way too much on the next gen HW which we wont see until at least Q4 2009 (At best!), If they had fixed their problems with a patch then I wouldn't be so bothered but Crytek has really annoyed me, because apparently (according to reviewers of CW) CW is just gonna be Crysis with a tad bit better performance and a different character, So really I should of not wasted my money on Crysis and waited for CW (the so called expansion pack - which is really just a bunch of fixes with a few extra additions here or there!) - Sorry I just feel really annoyed that Game devs give us a poorly optimised version and expect us to buy that and then buy it again just to let it work on our Hardware >:-(

Lower Existing CPU Prices further

I'm planning on holding out with my P5K3 Deluxe board for a couple of years yet. I'm simply going to upgrade me E8400 to one of the current high end Quad cores when they drop in price. Hopefully this announcemnet will mean this is sooner, rather than later.

Comment by KingDazza at 12:23pm 24th July 2008

Interesting

I wonder what the heat will be like when these get out, and for compatibility with current coolers on the market. And Niko, before you start claiming how great you are....I'm writing code for the world's biggest software company right now :-)

Comment by finlay666uk at 12:33pm 24th July 2008

@Niko

Fella, aint nothing wrong with the code in Crysis apart from the game itself is way ahead of its time!

Comment by CSQuake at 12:29pm 24th July 2008

Nice Idea

Release along with the X58 is a good marketing scheme for Intel, it will undoubtedly put a lot of pressure on AMD/ATi when the new chipset and CPU comes out in one big lump. Soon (I hope) we will be able to buy a complete Intel computer, CPU, MoBo, HDD, Graphics card all we need now is an Intel PSU, Optical Drive and possibly Intel Case (including fans :) )

Comment by Drake at 12:29pm 24th July 2008

all of a sudden everyone is an expert (looking at Niko)

Comment by pveater at 12:23pm 24th July 2008

Agreed Fin.

And Nehalem released soon.. interesting move.

Comment by C7ouD at 12:12pm 24th July 2008

Re: Crysis crap

Niko, have you done any game programming? If you are capable of writing something as tech advanced as Crysis please do let me know, otherwise don't make comments about coding for a game you have not worked on, not seen the code for and will not see the code for. Let alone working with a new API such as DirectX10 which was still in it's infancy As for Nehalem.....I will probably get it when it comes out, was going to upgrade my PC soon anyway

Comment by finlay666uk at 12:08pm 24th July 2008

Interesting find Hardwidge!!

Very nice news - I might be able to make the move to intel a bit sooner when they release the nahalem if this news is true!!, I think that this Nahalem is sounding better by the miniute!, I just hope that it aint all just goss that turns out to be a load of balls lol (sorta like Crysis was - cuz crysis's coding was what made that so crap...) I'm hoping that Intel can easilly adopt to this new integrated memory controller with no issues from the off.

black ribbed electric nobbler

The black ribbed electric nobbler is for when they raise us all up to a point of loving intel then shaft us all with it when they decide to go back to being the intel we all loath

Comment by paulpowers at 11:30am 24th July 2008

All Guns Blazing!!!!

What is it with Intel at the moment. They must have a new PR guy/gal who is trying to justify his/her big fat salary. SLi on their boards, Nehalem early release, cheap, silent and fast SSD's, Potentially good GPU's and the two pound black ribbed electric nobbler! The last one is obviously due for release to finish off the competition with a good shafting!
