Custom PC folding team takes number 7 spot

Posted at: 11:59am 4th August 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

Our production rate accelerates to over 850,000 points a day as we climb another place up the world leaderboard

Nvidia Folding@home GPU2 client

It may have taken 4.5 months to get there since we took the number 8 spot on the leaderboard, but all your work has been worthwhile as Custom PC’s world-class folding team has now proudly taken the number 7 slot from The_Tech_Report.

With our incredible production rate of 858,300 points a day (average), we climbed up another space on the leaderboard over the weekend, although we need to increase our production rate even further if we want to hold onto it. Both DL.TV and TSC!_Russia are locked on our tail, and the former is currently set to overtake us in just over two months, but we don’t need to let that happen.

A really easy way to make a worthwhile contribution to our folding team is to get your GPU folding by downloading the latest GPU2 client from here. The client works on both Nvidia and ATI’s DirectX 10 GPUs, and if you have an Nvidia GPU then you’ll manage to churn out several times the number of points that you would from a standard quad-core CPU, while an ATI GPU produces a similar number of points to a quad-core CPU. Either way, your GPU and CPU can both play a good role in our folding team. Similarly, if you have a PlayStation 3, then you can get that folding for team Custom PC too.

Not only will you help to get the UK’s premier folding team further up the world leaderboard, but you’ll also make a contribution to Stanford’s research into diseases such as Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s. Your work units may even save a life one day, so you’re not just getting your name in the mag. Team Custom PC has been up and running since early 2004, and has racked up 1,673,997 work units, with a total score of 343,275,624. You can check out our latest stats here. Anyway, we’d very much like to thank everyone on our folding team for their work units. We’re now at number 7 on the world leaderboard, and it’s all thanks to you guys.

What is folding?

Don't know what all this folding stuff is about? Folding@home is basically a distributed computing app that uses your spare clock cycles to simulate how proteins fold for the purposes of medical research. You can download the latest CPU and PS3 folding clients from here and join Custom PC's team by using the team ID: 35947. Also if you want any tips and tricks on upping your production rate, or just to introduce yourself to others on the team, then it's also worth checking out our folding forum.

Are the work units for the Nvidia gpu the same size as the ones for the other folding clients? I thought there was mention of them being different and due to be standardised soon...

Has the Nvidia GPU client been fixed enough to make it usable as part of a gaming system rather than as a deidcated folding rig? I got the impression it killed performance in games if you used the drivers for it.

My Dell 1720 (8600GT Mobile) apparently isn't supported. Any ideas? I'm currently using the console client on my desktop Athlon 64 x2 and laptop Core2Duo. I think I'm going to get left behind 8-/

They've updated the GPU client again the other day, so you can have the console version without the slowdown of the viewer and systray! Although the viewer was kind of cool.. either way it's made me glad I bought an 8800GT all that while ago.
