It's the successor to Core 2, but it's not a Core 3
First there was Core, then there was Core 2 and Sesame Street’s infamous purple Count might have a good chuckle after announcing Core 3 is the name for the next Nehalem based Core. He’d be wrong, though, if this rumour is true. Expreview reports that Intel’s new Core architecture is going to be called Core i7.
The site claims that the new processors, as well as a new Extreme Edition CPU, will be announced on 11 August, although they won’t be available until the official launch in the last quarter of this year. Much like Windows 7, the news has led to some speculation about what the ‘7’ means. As The Inquirer says, it’s not Intel’s seventh CPU architecture, although it is the third Core model, which would make seven if you added it to the four models of Pentium before that. We know, we’re clutching at straws here.
Naming aside, Nehalem is going to be an interesting new CPU architecture, featuring an integrated memory controller and a new socket design. As well as this, Nvidia has also announced that Intel’s forthcoming X58 chipset will support SLI through Nvidia’s nForce 200 chip.
If this is true, what do you think of the Core i7 name, and what do you think it means? Answers on a postcard to the comments section below.

Intel taking naming ideas from Apple... btw... Not a very good idea...

It's not like the CPU market is full of competing products, most buyers (ie not enthusiasts) don't know or care what's under the bonnet so long as it runs their software.
Yep. Definately must be a typo of 17 cause it's the first chip to hit 17 GHz :)
i7 looks like 17 from a distance. Core 17, City 17....maybe they could have teamed up with Valve and codenamed it Gordon instead of Nehalem.
I just want on, slapped into my new nforce board, and hitting speeds of 6ghz+ on air. ^_^
the new intel core234 and a little bit of 8

infinetly interacting incompetent internal instructors involved invariably? just pulling 'i's out of the air here to see what i come up with. give it a try.
As when it appears in my sig on the forums here, everyone who's anyone [I.E. PC Enthusiast] will know that 'Yes, TSB's running the new Nehalem cpu'... To the yet-to-get-to-enthusiast-level members of the forum [I.E Newbies wanting to learn] It's apparent that the Core i7 is neither backwards compatible with previous 'Core' [in terms of physical design] && nor is it a minor overhaul of the C2D. && Finally to the 'n00bs' who shop [and generally work] at PC World, it's also a demonstration that again, it's something 'fresh' && comparably better than the upgrade from say a P3 to a P4 cpu, perhaps? & additionally as Sifter & Reashlin said, not limited to 3 cores, as not everyone is aware as we might be. =] However, I do think Nehalem might be worthy of a new 'badge' so to speak, so am somewhat disappointed. But don't forget, it is just a rumour for now!
I don't I don't like it. i7 just doesn't do it for me. They should have named it Core3 like some others here suggested. However, if it kicks ass I'll still buy it no matter what it's called.
who cares if its as good as core 2 they could call it an asshat id still buy it lol
mind if companies wanted to make sure we knew exactly what version, the chip was we end up with 2008-08-08_162258_x86_32nm_p1_r1_v1 as a name
name thier products however they want... although it is nice to know what order they come in
name thier products however they want... although it is nice to know what order they come in
i=iteration , as in it was the 7th iteration of the new Design that became final? Bit of a long shot I'll admit! Plus if they carried that on, we'd all be dubious if the next remake became the Core i4743
I still know people that get confused a Core 2 can have 4 Cores.
I don't know about that. Core 3 Duo or Core 3 Quad seems clear enough to me.
Is that is kind of implies it has 3 cores. Which it doesn't.
Naming schemes in computer hardware are completely illogical and this is another example of that.
as much as Intel hate them, they've looked at nVidia's naming system and thought "hey, that's a good idea!". Maybe they're hoping for a marketing field day "Windows 7 works best with an i7 CPU2...or an i7 iMac or something equally ridiculous
It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue does it? ;)
