Ubisoft reveals the official system requirements for Far Cry 2, showing that it takes advanatge of multi-threading, and needs a more powerful PC than Crysis
Although most of us have already bought, tweaked, played and completed Crytek’s unofficial sequel to Far Cry, Crysis, Ubisoft is still going ahead with the official sequel Far Cry 2, and has now released the system requirements.
Surprisingly, the minimum system requirements are even higher than those of Crysis, which is amazing considering that Crysis brought most high-end PCs to their knees when Crysis was first released. The official minimum system requirements for Far Cry 2 are as follows:
The game also requires Shader Model 3, so it won’t work with ATI’s older X800 GPUs. By comparison, the minimum specs officially required for Crysis are a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 and a Radeon 9800 Pro. However, a machine based on those specs would be reduced to a gibbering wreck by Crysis at anything approaching half-decent settings.
Meanwhile, the recommended system requirements for Far Cry 2 are as follows:
Do you think your machine will be up to playing Far Cry 2? If so, are you interested in playing it, or has Crysis already stolen its thunder? Let us know your thoughts.
I'm sorry, but if your buying a computer to play games on, then your going to have to spend that little bit more on the hardware! I say a little bit more because you can get a decent gaming rig these days for around the £500 that will run Far Cry 2 and Crysis quite happily. Maybe not maxed out, but well within medium to high setting. You won't need to buy the most expensive components to run these games.
I don't think it'll be worse than crysis at all, you know why? Its being released on the consoles :) also im running 8800GTX on a 19-inch screen so im fine
1: to all those ppl who say "I haven't tried crysis yet because my pc blah blah blah..." - just like with far cry a big part of the experience was tweaking it so it would run & look nice - if you have done this you've definately missed out. 2: the recommjended set-up is actually lower than crysis. 8600 gts is a sucky card at best, so if ubi are to be believed anyone with anything better than that card should be smiling. Anyway that's my two-peneth. -GFE-2lock
your worried the far cry experience may be dumbed down for far cry 2 because of consoles?... I think perhaps you are remembering far cry with rose tinted memories... it was never a sophisticated game in any way shape or form... good fun yes, but not complex
I have yet to buy/play crysis. It looks amazing, got great reviews, but no game is good enough to justify a RAM, GFX and CPU upgrade. I think that Far Cry 2 will have people giving developers the finger, and saying "you want us to buy it, give us the kit". I think it is very unfair of developers to push games like this onto us, when they get lovely engineer grade kit straight from the producers for nothing, and we get to pay VAT and Shipping and Margins. In the words of the great monty python "RUN AWAY"
I have just bought myself after saving a quite a bit of money a few upgrades for my PC the best of which is 2 9800GTX+ From XFX. Iam guessing that my PC will have enough grunt although I never did try Crisis and i agree with other people and Iam looking forward to the new stalker more but i might just by it anyway because I did enjoy Far Cry in its first form :).
The Specs are a little scary however I believe my system can handle it, quad core and 48700 should love this game. Havn't played Crysis yet because I wanted to have the best experiance possible which means a system that can handle it. Far Cry 2 and Stalker are the games I am mostley looking forward too this year. But theres one concern with Far Cry 2 which is its on consoles too. I hope the experiance isn't dumbed down in any way.
.... I think more games should "advanatge of multi-threading."
If they don't take advantage of multi-threading, advanatge is the next best thing. Wunc grafffik kumponies ghet thair SIL solooshuns soreted thenn weel awl bee larfing.

Since when did the published minimum specs turn out to have any relation at all to how well the game actually plays? It may well be that they are just being a bit more honest than Crytek were about how much power you need, whilst only actually requiring a similar or lower amount of power to Crysis. Until people are playing it I remain sceptical.
That at least gives the Far Cry name some meaning. Calling it Far Cry 2 is a bit of a joke. Its as if Ubisoft turned around and said "we own the name, we're sure as hell going to use it". Its fortunate that they didn't attach it to a Pippa Funnel horse riding sequel.
Between Far Cry 2 and Crysis it's clear the theme of having Cry in the name somewhere is tied to what it causes gamers to do when they look at the minimum system specs.
The whole point of being a PC gaming enthusiast is to have graphics and tech that the console's will never have...Crysis is the only game that has provided that (not just from a resolution/AA/AF perspective) in a while - and since you can build a system for around £400 that will play Crysis at Med-High settings on your 720p HD TV, it's existence is more than justified IMO. I personally enjoyed the plot and action as well. As to Far Cry 2, I welcome the news that it will be a beast, as it gives me something that will actally NEED that Nehalem rig i've been promising myself in the early New Year :)
to see Ubis Idea of a FC sequel since we've seen Cryteks, but Crytek decided to leave the one biggest problem in there (the aliens) and UBi decided to do what everyone asked for and remove the aliens, and thank f*ck for that!! :)
What planet are they on? Crysis got absolutely slated for needing so much power which must have affected sales, even crytek have realised that the minimum specs put people off buying it and have optimised the crytek engine for crysis warhead so it runs better on slower machines. Crysis itself was wrecked by the boring alien levels so hopefully farcry 2 wont go down that road
I'd better be getting my GTX 260 soon then! In all seriousness, Crysis, like Far Cry, was great until the aliens/mutants arrived half way through. It needed a lot of power and looked pretty good, but it was no S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was it. Clear Sky looks much more interesting. That said, as long as FC2 doesn't lose the plot and introduce over-powered aliens or mutants half way through, it could be a bit of fun.
imagine lets just imagine for a sec and float off to a dream world where games like this would work on a geforce fx5200, and still dreaming, and still dreaming, and still... no wait... coming back to reality now... ah that was fun wasnt it. oh well
better go outside and stoke up the old cray XT5
Lets hope my PC is up for it, Crysis brought my 8800GTS (G80) to its knees at 1650x1080 so fingers crossed the 4870X2 can fair better, best start saving those wages now I guess, time to cash in the peny box too!
Can't wait for this to come out. Its going to be awesome. Even if the story line is rubbish, the gameplay should be amazing. It would be nice to be able to play it at 1680x1050 though at some decent settings, so I hope it is optimized for quad cores. I think I'm defaintly going to have to start OC'in my gfx card ready for this. :D
the only decent mission that I play on Crysis is Contact, but as soon as the aliens appear it just becomes another game for sci-fi geeks...
I mean I thought the new Stalker (whatever they're calling it) was going to be more 'friendly'...so why hasn't Far Cry followed suit ? Maybe they'll both support Quads and so if they're coded well, everyone with a 2.4Ghz Q6600 Go, will be laughing their sox off at tall the speedo's with their E8600's running at 4.5Ghz.....or maybe they'll just go out and buy a Q6600 - by Xmas they'll be giving them away.

I gather from your review of Crysis that you think the game is about the same as your spelling? pants. FYI your spelling and grammar is much worse. And besides I like Crysis :)
I admit that I'm not a huge fan of Crysis, but how on earth can you pull it down and then declare far cry as the best thing since slice bread? Far cry was widely known as little more than a tech demo for a graphics engine - a fact that becomes plainly obvious around halfway into it, as the bionic mutants start to make an appearance. Its clear that they ran out of ideas and tried to wrap it up any old way just to push it out the door.

yea it looked good gamplay was crap never boverd to play past 3 leval its just a pretty benchmark but farcry was my fave game exalent graphics+gameplay
As long as theres no aliens it should be good, and surely the recommended system requirements cant use an 8600 what resolution is that 640 * 480 !!
I could run it but the game just doesn't interest me. @l3v1ck agreed, certainly when it comes to GPU spec and RAM I always go by the recommended spec.
The minimum spec means nothing. They've probably just realised that the minimum spec for Crysis was too low. I'll take all this with a pinch of salt until I see the results of the CPC benchmarks.
Apart from having great graphics, i dont think it was a great game.. after completing it i dont feel compelled to pick it up agian (apart from benchmarking new hardware =p) shooting koreans was fun but the aliens ruined it for me.
