Intel officially announces the new name for its Nehalem CPUs, and explains that i7 is an identifier
Just as we reported in Rumour Control last week, Intel has today announced that its first Nehalem processors will be officially called Core i7, although the naming strategy isn’t quite as simple as we first thought.
In a similar way to when Intel dropped the number from the end of the names of its Pentium chips, the company is now dropping ‘Core 2’ in favour of ‘Core’ as a general name for its CPUs. The name Core will then be followed by an ‘identifier’ which, in the case of the first Nehalem CPUs is i7.
However, Intel says that ‘This is the first of several new identifiers to come as different products launch over the next year,’ so we’re going to be seeing a few different Core names in the near future. Intel has also officially launched the Core i7 logos, with a blue badge for standard desktop chips and a black coat of arms for the high-end Extreme Edition processor based on the Nehalem architecture. On top of the new name, Intel says it’s going to stick with its system of model numbers to differentiate between the chips as well.
As well as being Intel’s first desktop CPU architecture with an integrated memory controller, the Core i7 CPUs will also bring back the Hyper-Threading technology first found in Intel’s Pentium 4 and Xeon CPUs, where a CPU’s resources can be split between two threads to enable multi-threading on one core. Intel was originally planning to relaunch this as Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT), but it’s now decided to stick with the old Hyper-Threading moniker after all. The introduction of Hyper-Threading will effectively mean that a quad-core CPU can handle eight threads simultaneously.

Balla are you serious? Nehalem has been in development for years. Core 2 has been around for ages. I've been waiting for the last year for Nehalem. Stop moaning. You don't have to upgrade. Me on the other hand, can't wait!
If you dont want a faster CPU then dont get one... but other people here want some that are faster than the current offerings
Intel needs to stop screwing around, I just got use to the quad's and duo's, what the hell!!!

that the Guy who came up with the name was a bit self obsessed...
the IT industry dropepd the whole i thing ... it only stands for interactive... so the iPod is just an interactive pod (and by pod they meant rectangular plastic box)... wowwww the iMac an interactive Mac (weren't you able to interact with Macs before?)... Intel have a slightly better reason for using i .. at least its the first letter of their company name and as such has a meaning beyond just 'you can do something with it'
iThought iT was funny. Noone said that all the i's iN front of stuff were serious... iT's just funny.
just a bit of iHumour..sorry if I pinched a nerve there...
It's 7 since Pentium was gen 5 Core was gen 6 so the new architecture is gen 7 (thats the offical line i read elsewhere) As to all the Mac haters, Intel used the whole "i" title long before Apple did so grow up, if you were grown up you would remember that. I though Core2Duo and Core2Quad were ridiculously confusing to the average joe so I'm very happy they have dumped Core3. I'd guess the new mobile chips with be Core m7 etc.

that the xtreme version is called the i1337 and comes with bells and whistles on the heaksink.
iDon't get the 7 either, and I'm still sure the i is just to cement intel's iMarriage with Mac so Mac-iZombies have something to recognise. Nehalem does sound more iMenacing and iPowerful with slight demonic under-iTones so i'M baffled why they didn't stick with it. you could iMagine what kind of car a Dodge Nehalem would be...iMad beast that would scare the Viper shetliss. RUMOUR CONTROL: Intel to re-market themselves as iTel
this may be a V12 pentium proccessor but my god it can dance!!
Why 7? Just a random number they liked the sound of, like Heinz's "57 varieties", or maybe some kind of reference to Windows 7?
Welcome to the party iCore, you going into a next-gen apple iMac with some nice ilarrybird graphics and a new 128GB intel iSSD?
Dig, dig, digg!! - On topic, all I wanna see now is some benchies...
Ok, so someone mentions a CPU and we just cant resist a dig at AMD? On topic, it will be interesting to see if they keep the Pentium brand name for some of the Nehalem CPUs or let it die with 775. Personally I'm suprised they have kept it as long as they have, sure its a name people know... but why they know it may not be so positive.
Just as long as they keep pushing themselves to give us the best product at the best price. With AMD constantly shooting themselves in the foot, it's must be hard for Intel not to rip us off. With no real competition there is nothing stopping them from releasing below par products. However, initial rumours suggest Intel aren't about to do that with i7.
