Featuring two Radeon HD 4870 GPUs, and a massive 2GB frame buffer of 3.6GHz GDDR5 memory, the card has just scored 95 per cent for performance: read our Radeon HD 4870 X2 review here.
Of course, we know that prices can vary massively between different retailers, which is why we’ve had a good look through various retailers’ sites to see how their prices compare on various cards. Along with the PowerColor card that we tested, we also looked for prices of some other models, just to give a fair snapshot of the market. All the cards listed have the same standard specs, with a 750MHz core and 2GB of 3.6GHz GDDR5 memory.
You can see our findings in the table below, with eBuyer currently offering the best deal on the PowerColor card that we tested for £344.95 inc VAT. That said, not many UK retailers have revealed their prices for the cards yet, so check back later today for a wider price comparison.

That as most games are optimised for nVidia eg. Crysis that it might still be better to buy nVidia for the future. However this must be worrying for nVidia as even the single 4870 is close to its top end card, and possibly even better with high AA. Stuck at crossroads lol cos the X2 kicks ass.

You've bigged up the card too much. O/Clockers have bunged £11 onto the price of the sapphire board. Pre ordered mine from Play.com £345 free del.
And I stil dont have enough spare cash :( was banking on this being near £300, but I will wait a month to see what happens, I dont want to pay and it goes down £100 in a month *cough*GTX280*cough* :D
it's not the variance in the economic strengths of each country... the conversion rate already accounts for that... that's why it is constantly changing.
This article is about video card not IE or FF....FFS
If i had to use IE it would be 8, apart form anythgin else it finally conforms to web standards rather than microsofts own interpretation (which is what led to some sotes only working in IE in the firts place). This does of course have the amusing result that some "IE only" web pages no longer work in the latest version of IE... unless you tell it to emulate IE 7. Personally I use firefox both at home and at work.
I agree, but I would definately say that IE8 (Beta) is a much better choice, even just for the abillity to dag and drop links/rss's to the top and it works like a toolbar... but with your personal favorite links on it!! (I believe FF has had this for a while, but I only use FF when IE plays up... so roughly once every 6-12 months...)
tech at young ages should be a primary obj for the country . but this scummy parliament thinks you should pay a mazzive price for the privvi , get the cost down and kids will be able to spend more time on pcs they will no longer be left behind by the rest of the world jj7
It itsnt expensive, its just out countries economy is of such a higher net value than most other countries that it appears expensive. Mnay compare prices to America to the UK... Well cmon, you can get the bank of america for 3 british pounds! xD
People, it's surely time for IE 7 or FireFox. It's much better for you :)
We get it with everything imported and to be honest even when it's made in this country as well. From itunes tracks to cars, we get shafted on prices that cannot be explained by currency exchange rates and shipping alone. If the products are made in the far east then is it any more expensive to ship to the UK than to the US or even across to europe? We tend to take it on our knees over here and even though a few of us protest about it, we still get the biggest shaft.
prices of electronic (and especially pc) equipment tend to be higher comparitively in the uk than the US... that is why you cannot use a conversion of US prices to determine how much something is going to cost in the UK ... it just doesn't work that way.
Its the rip off we commonly refer to as "17.5% VAT" (plus a tenner, which may be transport cost)
As its sold at $549 in the US (which is £292 at todays exchange rate) and the cheapest over here is £354 that is £62 transportation cost whats it come in a gold plated box airmail from the U.S.?
this page doesn't show properly. On my 1600x1200 screen at work I see only letter "S" and half of "a" from what I assume is Saphire column. Running Explorer 6
Thanks for that info, just updated the table
You might like to try checking your browser or your own intelect before casting aspersions on the cpc team ... I can read all the charts and tables in the article...
Just to add to the price comparision, i just checked Aria's webpage and they selling the Sapphire for £347.74
cant read the table, make's you wonder about the capabilities of tthis lot in custom PC
Guys, please keep the talk on topic and refrain from insulting other commenters :)
That price is pretty much out the window when looking at or comparing these kind of cards. It seems if you really want one, you'll fork out pretty much any sum to own one. Personally I want two but gonna have to wait a long long while before my wallet can take a hit like that.
poker muppet, you are on the wrong website. This website is for the enthusiasts, hobbyists and showcasing new tech. I would recommend Antiques Roadshow or Cash In The attic - these are much more up your street.
I find it funny how people talk about price and value when commenting on these extreme cards. There is no value what so ever to be had by buying these cards. The increase in performance is noticable but not that noticable that I would consider paying out £400 just for a GPU set up. I am not knocking people for buying them. If you can afford it good luck to you, I do wish I could. But please do not include arguments about value for money in your reason for buying these products.
Every bit of news about graphics always starts off these "slating competitions"... at the end of the day, its obvious who the winners are, our comments wont make a difference!!
I really would wait before splashing out on this sandwich card. The reviews still note a few problems which although they dont sound as bad as the 3870X2, they still ask for caution. Even with the price tag I would prefer the GTX280 as for my screen res it still out performs the 4870X2 and comes in at least £70 cheaper. It also doesn't have the driver problems associated with the ATi cards. Also, the rumour mill is going nuts about an X2 SLi card due out from Nvidia. Again, I'm not a big fan of the X2 cards but if the ATi X2 card just about beats the single Nvidia card then the X2 Nvidia card should do a bit more damage in performance and no doubt your wallet.
I'd rather get an Nvidia card with physx support
He said you need an nvidia chipset to run 2 260's, not the ati card.
NotFred, what are you talking about you need an Nforce chipset to use an ATi card, no you don't, it will fit fine on my EVGA 680i mobo, you just can't use 2 4870x2 in Crossfire, but you have Crossfire in 1 4870x2 anyway. ATi Radeon 4870x2 coming to an Nforce 680i mobo in about a months time.
£ 309.57 Incl. VAT (look on frugal) http://www.digital-fusion.co.uk/Inu_products/INU_ProdDetailsL9.asp?ref=28592509 For a Sapphire (class ati cards) never heard anything about the shop but look at the price
This is the launch price right wait 1 or 2 weeks and the price will drop i think one will apear under 300 in just under a month. While the the gtx260 will do well to limbo under the 145 mark in the same time.
The two 260s will come out to a similar price for the cards, however remember that for those you will need an Nforce chipset, which will add about £50 to the price of the motherboard (not to mention the generally poor performance of these board, IMO). I would expect the 4870x2 to come out on top anyway
i know cpc will do their own test which i look forward 2 as 1 set of tests is never conclusive but if these are anything to go by.. ati all the way...goooo amd/ati http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/4870-x2-amd,1992-7.html
when am i going to see quad crossfire ripping up the benchmarks?
I would also like to see a direct performance comparison between a 4870x2 and two 260's as they do work out to about the same price
so it is at best cheaper than 2 260's and at worst about the same. So... how do 2 x 260's compare in performance? I have to say though, I prefer the idea of having all my graphics on a single card, so the 2x4870 is better in those respects (especially as i dont have a x-fire or sli m.board), but I really want to be able to run physx on my g.card, and that, at present, rules out ATI
