Microsoft to launch new mouse technology next month

Posted at: 11:23am 27th August 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

We could be bidding farewell to laser mice next month, if Microsoft’s teaser graphic is to be believed

Microsoft - goodbye to laser teaser graphic

First there were mice with balls that got clogged up with dirt, then there were optical mice with a pretty red glow and then there were high-resolution laser mice with spaceage designs. You might think that this would be enough for gamers looking for accuracy, but a new teaser graphic on Microsoft’s Hardware website suggests that Microsoft has a brand new peripheral on the horizon, and that it will be even better than a laser mouse.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t get to the site without going to an international redirect page. However, Todd Bishop at SeattlePi has a screenshot of the graphic from the US side and says that Microsoft is planning an event in Seattle to launch the new hardware. According to the graphic, the launch date of the new product is 9 September this year. With a caption that reads: ‘Say Goodbye to Laser,’ the graphic hints at a new form of mouse technology, but we don’t know what the seven blue pads are implying.

Could this be hinting at a form of Microsoft’s multi-touch technology that it recently demonstrated, or could it be a completely new mouse technology? What would you like to see in a new mouse? Let us know your thoughts.

Each to their own, ad infinitum...

As has been said below/above (whichever way these posts run); "don't like it/them, dont use their product(s)". I'm happy with my 8yo MS keyboard & mouse (Internet Pro & Intellimouse™ Optical, resp.) -- I just can't decide what to replace them with (mouse, especially), that will instill the level of confidence of build quality, ergonomics, etc as the current items I have... No; not looking for recommendations, just adding my input to the discussion...

Apparently Bill Gates has pledged his fortune to charity, rather than his kids. All this microsoft bashing tends to get a bit boring. If you don't like Microsoft, don't use the OS.

LOL @ Everyone who likes MS

No, I am not a Linux user... Ironically I am a Vista user (lol). I am aware that MS make a lot of money, I am aware Bill Gates is a total tosser, I am aware they are money grabbing...um.... people. All I am saying is that there is no need to keep making new stuff, particularly new stuff as pointless as all this crap. For example, Vista. They are already working on Windows 7, why? No one liked Vista, no one will like crappy Windows 7. Why can't they just be happy with what they've got while they check their bank account ffs. Apple.... do you see them coming out with a new OS every month? Nope. Do you see them inventing pointless crap that no one will like? Nope. Do you see people saying how crap all their stuff is? Nope. Get the hint? MS have had their day, they are old news. Move on, for everyones sake.

LOL @ mitzy1002000

That's a good one. You're a linux man by any chance? Everything they have done makes money, eventually. As to their hardware, I've used Microsoft keyboards and mice for over 6 years only just replaced my gaming setup with the Microsoft Razer products. Very impressed with them and would recommend them. As the secret is now out on what is being replaced, it just looks like a more accurate laser only blue. If they can prove it works better then I'm sure it will become standard.

at the 'I reckon' post, I meant.

Anyway, I am intrigued as to how MS thinks it can better laser technology. I guess only time will tell. As always. Stupid time. tch.

@mitzy1002000

MS fail at every thing they do!? Really? Have they gone bust? Oh wait, MS is the most successful company ever!* MS hardware is also amazing, it used to make the best ball mice back in the day and is still up near the top today. Go away with your anti MS rubbish. *I could be well off with that one! :)

What about a mouse that uses an accelerometer?

Comment by crcampbell at 8:18pm 27th August 2008

Why do we need yet another new mouse? Optical is good enough, let alone Laser. Blue Track is just a pathetic way to to fail making money. Microsoft can't accept that all this new stuff doesn't change anything. Take Vista for example... when it first came out, no one liked it. It was a failure, and even now many people refuse to upgrade to it. It will be the same with this, everyone will just ignore it. And, at Microsoft's usually steep prices, I don't blame them. Microsoft - for god sake, get the hint. You fail, always have, always will. If you're gonna invent new stuff, make it something remotely interesting that people can actually benefit from!

I reckon....

it'll be pressure sensitive as well.... that way it can tell when its been mistreated. que a whole new 'look after your mouse' type work games. Or maybe it measure pulse rate and tells you when you've had too much coffee... or not enough. It could send gentle electric shocks when your heart stops.

The colour of cutting edge is blue

First we had blu-ray, now we have blu-mouse. Kind of expected something a bit more exciting though...

Cogwulf...

most people using graphics apps use a tablet/pen or even touchscreens (Cintiq) as they are pretty damn accurate...and there's always k/b input for accurate numerical values...Minority Report would be good...it could also be like the Wii's nunchuk

Comment by EdArch at 2:15pm 27th August 2008

@gavomatic57

thats a good point... lol

Comment by NotFred at 2:09pm 27th August 2008

Perhaps it is some sort of device that detects your hand movements, so you don't actually have to touch or hold anything. A bit like 'Minority Report' but on your desk...

Definitely a mouse!?

"Say goodbye to laser" could also mean a new printer technology is on the way...

I'm so getting me one of these

Through work when they come out :D

Comment by finlay666uk at 12:28pm 27th August 2008

the only people who have any need for the accuracy of a laser mouse are gamers and people using things like graphics programs

Comment by Cogwulf at 11:46am 27th August 2008

It might just be the OCZ brain mouse

Comment by mindzai at 11:26am 27th August 2008

Goodbye laser!

Comment by CSQuake at 11:35am 27th August 2008

Most people are still using optical rather than laser which shows that most people don't care about the accuracy, they just want something cheap that will work. I know people that are still using a ball mouse for God's sake and they were awful, but they still used it. So unless this new mouse technology is something vastly different and cheap it will never catch on.
