Antec shows off its Skeleton

Antec shows off its innovative open Skeleton PC chassis at Nvision 2008

Nvision 2008: Amongst the plethora of exciting products Custom PC was able to see at Nvidia's Nvision 2008 was Antec’s eagerly anticipating Skeleton open-frame PC chassis.

The 0.8mm steel design can house two 5.25in devices and three 3.5in devices. Room for up to seven PCI expansion slots is provided, including space for 11in-long graphics cards. The motherboard tray is removable for easy assembly and will accommodate ATX form factor and smaller motherboards. The cooling comprises a huge 250mm fan on top and a 90mm fan to blow air over the hard drives. Although cooling is somewhat minimal (especially compared to other recent cases), those of you that run your PCs with the side panels removed will be familiar with how much this can help reduce the temperature of components.

Clearly, the innovative design isn't built with sleek, high-end gaming PCs in mind and any use of watercooling within the dimensions of the chassis is more or less out of the question. However because of its open-air frame, the Skeleton could be used for a build involving extensive external radiators, with tubing running through the framework to the waterblocks.

It'll be interesting to see how modders take advantage of the case, and if the design will inspire other manufacturers to follow suit in breaking the mould of the regular taditional box chassis. Are you a fan of the design? Let us know in the comments...

a few concerns

dust has been mentioned and it would probably settle everywhere if it wasnt cleaned out, which a problem many could live with. but the noise - it could be appalling especially with dual video cards. some powerful cards will still get hot and be noisy, and sat close to that huge fan could easily set up some intrusive frequencies thats arent being insulated. at all. thats why i feel the mini ITX design is the more inspiring and i would love to build a funky little machine thats portable or a compact desktop, and the larger design flawed

Antec have thought about that re: pets

I'd imagine you can take the grill off the top fan and use it as a Hamster run. I think that's a nice design touch by Antec.

A modder's dream come true

People who have a good imagination will have fun with this.

Nice but no thanks

Nice if you live alone, but with a couple of young kids that pc would be toast for sure, my cases are armour, to keep the kids out. did anyone mention spiders at all ?

imo i dont think this would be that dusty, the air filters on computers are far from 100% effective, to make filters more effective you need smaller holes, but this restricts air flow, so we wind up having 'kinda' filters that still let a lot of dust in. some of it is exausted with the hot air, some gets trapped in the psu, but ultimetly once it is in the system most dust will stay there untill you tke the side panel off and clean it. while the panels keep free-floating dust from getting in, they trap the dust that gets sucked in. without side panels this dosent happen, and it is a lot easier to clean than a normal case. i think this could be successful with enthusiasts, but no-one else, only soemone who knows computers well would be able to keep the system safe from static discharges without protective panels, so this won't make it w/ the mainstream consumers.

funny

i like it and to those of u worried about dust haha, do u have a hoover/vacuum cleaner?, i would suspect that using a h/v wouldnt take a lot of time and maybe just maybe it could be used twice a week? anyway i suspect we are all nerds that live in a cluttered under the stairs type affair and its mostly filled with empty pizza boxes and beer cans ;/

At first

I thought there was plexi between the frames, but it's an interesting case either way. The problem I see is that it targets a very small niche market - like people have said for people benching you'd use a bench table, and dust would be an issue for anyone keeping components in it in the long term. The only people I could see buying it are those who haven't got a test bench but would like one, and also want something a bit different. It's interesting, but not for more than its novelty value.

Looks like a vacuum cleaner. And it probably works like one too, sitting there gathering all the dust and food particles... I still like it. What a superb alternative to the "trendy" iMacs... The future is black and metal.

Nice

I like it ... that might say more about a lack of taste than a good taste ... Anyway, I do, I wonder the same about the dust problem and also having 2 cats ... would be a nightmare. It would be very cool on the components though!

Ugly

Looks ugly, But with a nice gaming Mobo in there, possibly some neon strips down the side Look nice?

Comment by Bioshox at 12:13pm 29th August 2008

not totaly convinced

It would be good if you were benching, but you'd usually av a bench table for that. Also all the components with fans would get clogged quickly with dust!! tuney
