Far Cry 2 release date revealed

Ubisoft’s official Far Cry sequel will be out in time for Christmas, and a Collectors’ Edition will also be available

Far Cry 2 Collector's Edition

Despite losing the Crytek development team to EA, Ubisoft has still ploughed on with the official sequel to Far Cry, and the developer has now revealed that the game will be out in just a few weeks. The official launch date is 24 October, and the game will launch simultaneously on the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, so we won’t have to wait several months for the PC version.

As well as the usual edition of the game, Ubisoft has also announced that a Collectors’ Edition will be available for those who are big on cash and short on levelheadedness. The Collectors’ Edition (pictured) will include an exclusive wooden box, two Far Cry 2 t-shirts, an ‘Art of Far Cry’ book, a making-of DVD and a map.

Unlike Crysis, which is set on a Philippine Island, Far Cry 2 will be set in Africa. Ubisoft’s European marketing director, John Parkes, describes the game as ‘an amazing journey that will take you to the darkest places of Africa where each player will choose how they play.’ He also added, that ‘this will provide gamers with an unprecedented experience in the FPS genre.’

More importantly to CPC readers, Far Cry 2 makes heavy use of multi-threading, with both the AI and the Havok physics engine running as separate threads on the CPU. As such, owners of dual-core and quad-core chips should get a performance boost from the game, and may be able to enable more effects. According to the game’s official minimum system requirements, a 2.66GHz Pentium D will perform similarly to a 3.2GHz Pentium 4, so it looks like it properly takes advantage of multi-core CPUs.

You can check out our sneak preview of the game from the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) here, where we saw animals in the game reacting differently according to varying threats and changes in the environment. The physics engine was also mightily impressive, with explosions making chaotic work of the game world.

Will Far Cry 2 make it to your Christmas list? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

wait for the reviews and frame rate tests before buying

A gtx 280 should have this game for breakfast (wish i could afford one). I think the 8800 onwards should get you through this game. I loved crysis even though it lagged bad, i'll probably enjoy it again in a few years when it will be as easy as fear is to run now.

what i find laughable

is comments like "I probably wont be able to play it on its jighest settings, so I wont buy it"... I mean, really, just think for a minute please. Your PC will play games up to a certain detail setting depending on how much you have spent on your hardware, right? So you have to lower the settings a bit on a game to play at your hardwares level, big deal. What are you really complaining about? If you buy another game which has slightly worse graphics but you can turn up to full details 'in-game' you are not getting any better performance, you are still just getting as good as your system can cope with, and maybe worse if you've maxed the game out. I could understand if there was a massive premium for games which pushed the hardware envelope, but there isn't, they retail for the same price as any other new title. Buying a game that your computer cant cope with at maxed out details just means you can use your hardware to the maximum, as opposed to the limit of the game... you are still getting a gaming experience equal to what your hardware can handle, and you can always go back and marvel at the prettiness in a few years later when you have upgraded.

polishing turds

As i said before, it ran fine for me, 1650x1080, 8800gts512, 2gb ddr2, oc'd e6300. Not exactly top of the line. Now with a 4870, 4gb ddr2, it runs fine at 1920x1080. But then i keep my machine clean, dont have limewire and bunches of spyware/av junking up the place, i dont have a ton of startup icons in the corner. Crysis was split straight down the middle in terms of opinion, but also in terms of performance and it tended to be that those with severly poor performance would be those with a lot of startup services, AV/spyware monitors, etc.. etc.. One potential remedy would be to make sure your min and recommended settings were a little more realistic.

Crysis Warhead ? You can't polish a turd !!

Crysis was supposed to do so much for the pc gaming industry and all it did was make a mokery of the user base. encouraging us to buy top end kit only to find it still lags on expensive SLI setups. Furthermore, To announce that you would no longer support crysis with patches on the most poorly optimised game I have played of course none of this is cryteks fault, it all get blamed on piracy that caused spiralling developement cost's.. so what do they do, announce Warhead which is the same game with the same engine and suprise suprise !! it's been fully optimised and you expect us the public to spend another £30 after you scammed us all the last time, don't make me laugh... Why didn't you keep crysis in developement for the extra year and release the whole thing now. ? Greedy Greedy people.. Well i'm sorry guys I don't care how good Far Cry was back in the day. this cat ain't given you any more money.. Stick you're Warhead up your arse.... Sideways

@kazara1001

You can always turn down the detail and/or resolution. Crysis wasnt a disaster for many people, runs fine for me. Bring on the pushing of graphical boundaries !

After the Disaster That Was Crysis

I will not be buying this pc resource sucking monstrosity of a game anytime soon. I will no doubt need a new rig to play it at max detail, so why bother? I will just wait for it to go down to £10 in the bargin bin and play it in 3 months time, by then, they may of optimised it and it might be playable?

Sounds Nice!

Think my PC would give up on the Loading Screen.

Is it worth it for me?

My PC meets the minimum specs, but not the recommended ones, as such I'll probably have to turn the settings down so it looks rubbish to get a playable frame rate. As such I doubt it's worth the cash until I've upgraded my PC.

At last multi threaded apps...

So glad I went for the Q6600 rather than dual core with my latest build....looks like its going to start to pay off.

Graphics Wars

EA & Ubisoft should be encouraged to fight (to the death) to see who can push the graphics envelope furthest in a FPS. Nvidia and ATI might offer support - after all Crysis must have done wonders for the sales of top-end graphics cards, and Far Cry 2 is likely to do likewise. Custom PC could make a special award to the winner. Meanwhile how about an extra-special award to the company who develops the first GPU able to run Crysis smoothly at very high settings (1920x1200). Let the games begin!

If it isnt playable at 19x10 with a 280, as long as this is only because its ridiculously detailed and not inefficiently programmed, thats fine with me :-)

Comment by Frohicky1 at 3:06pm 5th September 2008

looks nice

but i wont be impressed if its another game thats ridiculously demanding for the sake of upholding the far cry name. if the game cant be maxed full out 19 x 10 with a GT280 then the developmnent team needs a slap
