Custom PC folding team takes number 6 position

Posted at: 5:26pm 7th October 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

Our production rate increases to nearly 1.5 million points a day as we climb another place up the leaderboard

Nvidia Folding@home GPU2 client

If you’re on Custom PC’s folding team, then treat yourself to a celebratory pint, fish supper, curry or whatever takes your fancy tonight, as we’ve climbed up yet another place on the Folding@home leaderboard. The last time we ascended up the ranks, our production rate was an average of 858,300 points a day but, unbelievably, it’s now almost double that at 1,486,510 points per day.

This means that we’ve already taken the number 6 spot from Team_MacOS_X (over the weekend), and it’s now only going to be a matter of weeks before we take the number 5 position from Alliance_Francophone. Not only that, but we’ve also fought off the threat from DL.TV, while TSC!_Russia is going to take 9.4 years to catch up with us at its current production rate.

This is a really amazing achievement for a UK team, and we can’t quite believe that we’re heading for a place in the world’s top 5 folding teams in just a few weeks. Well done chaps, and chapesses, keep up the good work. Not only will you help to get the UK’s premier folding team further up the world leaderboard, but you’ll also make a contribution to Stanford’s research into diseases such as Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s.

What is folding?

New to the wonderful world of folding? Folding@home is basically a distributed computing app that uses your spare clock cycles to simulate how proteins fold for the purposes of medical research. You can download various folding clients from here and join Custom PC's team by using the team ID: 35947. Also if you want any tips and tricks on upping your production rate, or just to introduce yourself to others on the team, then it's also worth checking out our folding forum.

Team Custom PC has been up and running since early 2004, and has clocked 1,911,940 work units, with a total score of 422,805,919. You can check out our latest stats here.

Hardware

It comes of being a bunch of hardwareheads! I'm sure all the people investing in HD48x0 cards and gtx2x0 cards have boosted us no end. I know my 4870 combined with the fresh 1600FSB I put on my Q6600 is helping me out!

Excellent Progress

Well done CPC, lets see if we can give the top three place a little scare!

New Folders

Part of the rise is due to the swathe of new Folders on the team - with some new really high PPD'ers (as well as the old stalwarts). There's always room for more :-)
