Intel’s amazing Core i7 processor goes on sale today - with motherboards, CPUs and everything else needed all priced up and ready, Custom PC shows you where you need to go to find a Core i7 bargain.
Word has been out for a while that Intel’s new processor is
amazing, but until today you couldn’t buy anything. Now that Core i7 has
officially launched, you can start building your first super-fast Core i7 PC.
However, while retailers and manufacturers told us that the price for Core i7
motherboards would be fairly high, even these prices seem to have been conservative.
The cheapest motherboard we could find that was in stock and
ready ship today, was the Gigabyte GA-X58 UD5 for £226.72 from Aria. However, most cost over £250.
The prices of the CPUs themselves are also higher than we’d expected, with the supremely overclockable 2.66GHz
Intel Core i7-920 estimated at £235 inc VAT and actually costing £259.87 from Scan for the cooler-less OEM version. However, prices rise to
as much as £281.99 from Overclockers. The cheapest price for the Core i7-965 Extreme Edition is a massive £880.26 from Scan.
Add in a new cooler for the new LGA1366 processor socket and
some DDR3 memory and you're looking a big outlay to upgrade to Core i7.
Still, the Core
i7 benchmarks results show that it’s very fast, and magazine subscribers
should be reading about how great Core i7 is at the moment. Non-subscribers will have to wit until Thursday for
the Core i7-laden Issue 64 to hit the shelves.
It's not exactly Intel's fault, look at the price it's going for in some B&M new year sales state side $229.99 (Frys) inc sales tax I have been told by some yank frends, that is only around £158.38 at the current exchange rate (or £14 more than a top end Phenom over here). Yes we are getting ripped off in the UK again but it's not just the chips and MBs from Intel.
That was a valid comment towards the AMD fanboys moaning about the i7 price. £250 is not expensive for such a good CPU and if you can't afford it NOW whether you dont get paid enough or a student or other priorities, why is that Intels fault? Intel aren't the monster here.
Yea, i will be waiting to see what happens after christmas. So no presents for little ole me :( Its a toss up between upgrading the PC, getting a MacBook Pro of an iPod Touch. *oh shit i said Mac... The PC fanboys are gonna have a field day!* I heard that the new apple desktops are gonna all have i7 processors! So we will just have to see if the prices die down after launch
I though it was a misprint. Although it would be so sweet if the prices of the memory came down to that! It would certainly make up for the CRAZY mobo prices. 6GB of DDR3 *yummies* *eats cookies*

anyone who thinks the i7 is overpriced look at the Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775 3.20GHz Retail currently £815.00 to £2,049.99 from a frugal search. The little 920i matches that speed for how much around 250 quid. so cut intel a brake they have put the i7 in high enough to make there currant offerings still buy able think of the core2's they still have to sell. If the new i7 was just say 150 pounds would any more core2's be sold? As for the motherboards they represent a whole new chipset not just a step up from the old one I think a lot of effort has gone into making them ready for sale at the same time as intels chip.

'If you can't afford it, why is that Intel's fault?' Its exactly their fault and their problem if people (or businesses) can't afford their products. They're not selling Ferrari's here; they need to offer a financially viable product (which I think they have done) otherwise no one will buy it. What if it was £5000? Would you be saying that... no! Price versus performance is everything to me when deciding my next bit of kit. Anyway looks like another great product from Intel.
pveater makes a valid point. Remember when the Q6600 came out and was instantly picked up to be an outstanding CPU. I first saw that CPU for £175 odd and that was me getting in on it late. I picked one up a year later for £105. The demand actually brought the price DOWN. It's gone up a few pounds now. The E6600 was also a bloody good CPU. What you will find is the 920 selling more than the other 2 and not just on cost as it performs like a demon anyway.
Didnt anyone compare to this when CORE2 came out with the E6600 that i still currently possess? Mine costed about £210 odd at the time. so tbh with only three chips on the market, its about right. Problem is with price skimming mainly employed here with the economies status probably wasnt going to be an overwhelming amount of orders. Maybe in 6 months down the road it might take off, once extra chips, competition and prices catch up.
"If you can't afford it, why is that Intel's fault?".... its not but I'd bet at least some of the reason for Core's success over its alternatives was its affordability.
I'll show you mine if you show me yours! Deneb isn't released yet and you all have no idea what the specifications will be. As of today, i7 IS the only product to build a top/high end PC rig. If you can't afford it, why is that Intel's fault?

the price drops in the first 3 or 4 months of a new standard are always the biggest come on the a core i7 running at 3.6ghz will be like a core2 running at 4.32ghz and you know you want that speed. I think the ram will fall the fastest after xmas down to a more resonable 180 for 6gb. and Mobos will be down to 200.
If AMD's Deneb is an advance on current Phenoms I will be going for an AM2+ mobo and a BIOS update for Deneb. Intel has shot itself in the foot with these extortionate prices
these prices need to come down . we are in a recession and they come out with these pathetic over the top prices. I don't care how fast they are i not going to waste money.
£220 for a motherboard! The absolute maximum I'd even think about paying for a motherboard is half that.
Why would they need a skull trail version any time soon? The LGA1366 processor will have 8 core chips second or third quarter of next year that will be really really fast.
If an SK rig comes out thats gonna be the equivilent of a second credit crash in your pocket.

Yep! Scan are selling this memory for 317.24 inc vat. Even the xmx revision is 240 quid. Most definately a miss print, or a drastic price increase...
I just read the CPC mag and it says that i can get 6GB of Dominator memory from scan *1600MHZ* for £190!!! But i cant find it! Must be a misprint... Anybody if you see it. Link here please
Hmmm... I'm thinking of a two word phrase, second word 'off'...
I'm assuming the £-$ exchange rate nosediving is partly responsible for the prices. Even so I'll be holding off for a while, certainly until decent heatsinks are released and motherboard prices hit sub-£200.
It is just me who's having problems viewing those price tables, or are they going off the page for other people too?
how long till the core 2s go down then i can get a good pc really cheap LMAO
i dont mind stumping up 250 quid for the 920, as its easily worth that being able to outstrip any core 2. the problem i have is the boards are all pretty extortionate. im not one for blowing 250 pounds on a motherboard. lets hope that in the new year the chipsets will be more reasonable and a better selection, 150 pounds is more realistic IMO
You can get the 920 for 246.69 inc vat and the 965 for 857.69 inc vat from aria. Although they're already out of stock!!
How much were the Core Solo and Duos and the Core 2s when they came out?
Really looking forward to this...So going to build in the new year and hopefully the price will have dropped a bit after Christmas..
so we will come back to this after christmas when the price will be more like something we can afford.
my mate was going to purchase one of these but after seeing the price I dont think it will be happening any time soon.
Ok so new chips always command a premium but I didn't expect the motherboards to be so pricey.
Nice chip but far too expensive for the credit crunched uk....
