Verdict: Cheap, but not very overclockable
Ultra, while an unknown brand over here in Blighty, has been mixing it up with the big boys stateside for some time. This particular pair of DIMMs is aiming, along with the Corsair TwinX 1024-3200XLPT, for control of the performance memory market.
Ultra's memory comes packaged in a mahogany box. While Ultra claims that 'antistatic lining and gold-plated hinges make this the ultimate in memory packaging', it strikes us as more of a pretty gimmick.
If the Ultra needs a gimmick, it's because it's an average performer. Packing fairly standard memory timings, its performance in our Media Benchmarks wasn't phenomenal. It also refused to overclock very far, even with very relaxed timings.
Ironically, performance worsened the more we overclocked, regardless of what latency timings we used, or how much voltage we ran through the DIMMs. This is almost certainly due to data corruption within the modules.
The Ultra is a good £90 cheaper than the Corsair, although the Corsair is the better overclocker. If you're a serious overclocker, however, we'd recommend buying faster-rated modules (PC3700 or higher).
If you're looking for some decent memory at a good price, and aren't too bothered about overclocking, then the Ultra may be worth considering.
